Rural cancer survivors are less healthy than urban counterparts; 25 percent of rural cancer survivors smoke

A quarter of rural cancer survivors smoke.
Cancer survivors from rural areas live less healthier lives than survivors from urban areas. That's the diagnosis of a study by the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., which asked a random sample of rural and urban survivors their body weight, and if they smoked, drank alcohol, and exercised.

The study found that 25 percent of rural cancer survivors smoked, compared to 16 percent from urban areas. It didn't have state-by-state figures, but Kentucky has high rates of both cancer and smoking.

Fifty-one percent of rural survivors didn't participate in any physical activities at all, compared to 39 percent for urban survivors, and 66 percent of rural survivors were obese, while 63 percent of urban ones were. Fewer rural survivors drank alcohol, a difference of 46 percent to 59 percent, and 18 percent of them were more likely to be unemployed because of health reasons, compared to 11 percent for urban survivors.

"Rural cancer survivors may not be receiving messages from their health-care providers about how important quitting smoking and being physical active are after cancer," said Kathryn E. Weaver, assistant professor of social sciences and health policy at Wake Forest Baptist. "It is concerning that we found higher rates of health-compromising behaviors among rural survivors, when we know cancer survivors who smoke, are overweight, or are inactive are at higher risk for poor outcomes, including cancer recurrence and second cancers." Don't get burned, bitten or bamboozled this summer; here are safety tips for dealing with the sun, insects and sales pitches

By Molly Burchett
Kentucky Health News

Summer is finally here, and after one of the coldest Kentucky springs, who doesn't want to be outside swimming, skiing, fishing, barbecuing or soaking up rays on the beach? While summer may bring much-anticipated fun in the sun, it's important to take some  safety precautions to make sure you and your family are not getting too much of a good thing.

Sunscreen can protect you from cancer, but don't spray it

The sun is bad for your skin, and exposure to its harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase your risk for skin cancer, which is the most common cancer in the U.S., says the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's critical to protect yourself and your children from sun damage because just one blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles the odds of developing skin cancer later in life, says the Mayo Clinic.

Fortunately, it’s never too late or too early to lessen your risk of sun damage by using sunscreen, and the Environmental Working Group has recently released its 2013 Guide to Sunscreens, which rates more than 1,400 sunscreens, lip balms, and SPF moisturizers and cosmetics for safety and effectiveness.

This year, EWG says 184 sunscreens, 25 percent of those on the market, met its criteria of offering adequate UV protection and posing few safety concerns. You can click here to view that product list, or here to check out the EWG findings for moisturizers, lip balm and makeup.

EWG also created a somewhat surprising list of things NOT to bring on vacation because they are unsafe or do not provide adequate UV protection:
  • Spray sunscreen: These sprays may pose serious inhalation risks, and they make it too easy to not apply enough sunscreen or to miss a spot.
  • High-SPF sunscreens: These products may tempt people to stay in the sun too long, which can increase the risk of other kinds of skin damage, and EWG recommends that consumers avoid products labeled higher than SPF 50.
  • Oxybenzone: Used in half of sunscreen products, this chemical penetrates the skin and can adversely impact health in several ways; in the body, it acts like the female hormone estrogen and can cause allregic reactions.
  • Loose powder sunscreen: Tiny zinc particles in these products can also end up in your lungs when you breathe them in during application, which irritates the lungs.
  • Retinyl palmitate: Some sunscreens contain this chemical, which is a form of vitamin A, but when applied to sun-exposed skin, it may speed development of skin tumors and lesions.
  • Combined sunscreen/bug repellents: Studies show this combination leads to increased skin absorption of the repellent ingredients.
  • Sunscreen towelettes: Whether they really work is unknown.
  • Tanning oils: They are simply a bad idea and can ultimately lead to behavior that increases risk of developing skin cancer.
So, check the ingredients for your sunscreen, avoid high-SPF's or sprays and make it a habit to wear sunscreen during sports or whenever you're outside. Be sure to reapply often to ensure UV protection, particularly if you get wet or sweaty. Click here to read EWG's "Nine Surprising Facts about Sunscreen."

Hats and clothing: Choose the right kind

Children are more vulnerable to sun damage, so in addition to actual sunscreen, the best sun protections for them are a hat and shirt (which also protect adults). The CDC recommends avoiding straw hats that let sun through the holes, and to wear a hat with UV protection or a wide brim to shield the face, head, ear and neck. If you do chose to wear a baseball cap, protect your ears and neck with clothing, sunscreen (with at least SPF 15) or spend lots of time in shade.

Wear clothing to protect exposed skin. The CDC says loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best UV protection. Darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors, and a wet t-shirt offers much less UV protection that a dry one.

Sunburn treatment: People with fair skin or light-colored hair are more likely to be sunburned. If you get sunburned, remember that "The skin heals but is forever damaged," writes University of Kentucky nursing Professor Mollie Aheshire. "The more frequent and more severe the burns, the more damage there is," along with risk for cancer and premature aging. "If a sunburn is blistering and covers a large portion of your body; is accompanied by a high fever, extreme pain, confusion, nausea or chills; or does not respond to at-home treatment within a few days . . . see a health-care provider." Mild sunburns can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, cold compresses and moisturizing creams — aloe vera or hydrocortisone lotions. "If blisters form, do not break them," Aheshire writes. "Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Treat peeling skin gently. Stay out of the sun until redness and pain resolve." (Read more)

Sunglasses: Not just to help you see now, but to keep you seeing longer

Besides being dangerous for your skin, UV rays are dangerous to your eyes and can cause vision disorders, premature aging of the eyes or even blindness. It is important to wear sunglasses to protect eyes from sun damage, although a new survey from the American Optometric Association shows that only 40 percent of consumers cite this protection as the primary reason for wearing sunglasses, says a Kentucky Optometric Association press release.

To help reduce the risks of harmful UV exposure on the eyes, children and adults should start wearing protective sunglasses as as early as possible, and parents should ensure that babies are protected by sunglasses too, says the release. When choosing sunglasses or protective contact lenses, make sure that they block more than 95 percent of UV-A and more than 99 percent of UV-B radiation, says the KOA, and sunglasses should have a frame that fits close to the eyes so the UV rays can't sneak around the sides.

Insect repellent: Bugs can bug you, but don't over-react to them

Although nothing can ruin a relaxing summer picnic faster than bugs, take precautions to ensure you're using the right type of bug repellent-- one that's been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency -- and that you're using it wisely.

Not only are bugs annoying, they can also carry dangerous diseases, and for the safe and effective use bug repellents, always read the product label before using the product, EPA says. It says to follow these bug-repellent safety tips:
  • Repellents should be applied only to exposed skin and/or clothing. Do not use them under clothing.
  • Store insect repellents safely out of the reach of children.
  • Do not apply near eyes and mouth, and be use sparingly around the ears.
  • When using sprays, spray on the hands first and then apply to the face, not directly to the face.
  • Never use repellents over cuts, wounds or irritated skin.
  • Do not spray in enclosed areas and avoid spraying near food.
  • After returning indoors, wash treated skin and clothes with soap and water.
  • Do not use any product on pets or other animals
  • Most insect repellents do not work on lice or fleas.
  • Click here to search for a repellent that's right for you.
Beware if you want to use a wearable repellent that's not sticky and has to be continuously resprayed, such as Off!'s clip-on mosquito repellent. It works once the cloud of mosquito protection is built around the wearer, says Brighid Moret of The Washington Times, but it's not a good option for an active or young child. The manufacturer warns on the label that a chemical on the product's enclosed disk is harmful if swallowed, directly inhaled or absorbed through the skin, and young children should not wear it.

Whether you're going on vacation or a "stay-cation," these tips can help protect you and your family from the sun and bugs in order to safely make the most of your summer. Click here for more sun safety tips from EWG.

Beetroot Juice Fights Cancer, Lowers Blood Pressure and Increases Stamina

Beetroot which fights cancer, boosts endurance and lowers blood pressure

BEETROOT: BRAIN BOOSTER

A 2011 study carried out by Wake Forest University in North Carolina found beetroot may slow the progression of dementia.
It is thought this is because nitric oxide boosts blood flow to the brain. Beetroot’s high folic acid content – approximately 75 per cent of your recommended daily allowance (RDA) in just two or three small beetroots – may also play a role as previous research has suggested the nutrient protects against Alzheimer’s.

BEETROOT: FIGHTING CANCER

Betacyanin, the pigment that gives beetroot its rich hue, is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to possess anti-cancer properties.
In 2011, a study carried out by Howard University in Washington, USA,  found that betacyanin slowed tumor growth by 12.5 per cent when exposed to prostate and breast cancer cells.
More research needs to be carried out to see if consuming beetroot would have a similar  anti-cancer effect.

'Incredible Colon' to march across the state in Colon Cancer Awareness Month; more than a dozen stops scheduled

A special tour throughout the state of the Incredible Colon — an inflatable model of a human colon, large enough for visitors to walk through it — will promote education about risks and preventive measures of colon cancer during March, National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality in Kentucky and nationwide, and it affects men and women of all ethnicities. Kentuckians have a higher than average risk of colon cancer due to higher rates of obesity, diets high in fat, and lack of regular exercise.

As many as 60 percent of deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented if everyone age 50 and older were screened regularly, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Screenings detect any abnormalities or early signs of cancer, like polyps in the colon, and when detected early, polyps can be easily removed during a colonoscopy before they develop into cancer. When colon cancer is found early and treated, the five-year relative survival rate is 90 percent, underscoring the need for preventive health exams.

However, only 63 percent of Kentuckians who should have screening tests have had them, according to Kentucky data from the federal Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, an ongoing national survey.

The colon tour is a coordinated promotion by the Kentucky Cancer Program, local cancer councils and the Kentucky Colon Cancer Prevention Project. It is free and open to the public and will take place in 13 Kentucky communities March 4-28:

• March 4: Fleming County Hospital, Flemingsburg (10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.)
• March 5: Walmart, Manchester (Noon - 4 p.m.)
• March 6: Hazard ARH Medical Mall, Hazard (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
• March 7: Rowan County Chamber of Commerce, Morehead (members
  only, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
• March 8: Frankfort Regional Hospital, Frankfort (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
• March 19: Lexmark, Lexington, (Employees only, 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
• March 20: Lawrence County High School, Louisa (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
• March 21: Lady of Bellefonte Health Center, Grayson (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
• March 23: Phillip Sharp Middle School, Butler (8-11 a.m. )
• March 25: Town Center Mall, Ashland (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
• March 26: Walmart, Georgetown (3-6 p.m.)
• March 27: Adron Doran University Center, Morehead (9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
• March 28: Walmart, Somerset (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

Attendees are invited to dress in blue, the color of colon cancer awareness, and there will be door prizes, giveaways (while supplies last), refreshments and educational information about colon cancer screening, prevention and early detection. (Read more)

Avoid virus-linked cancers, including cervical cancer, with shots

With a simple vaccine, you can avoid HPV-linked cancer, including cervical cancer and many cancers of the mouth, throat, anus and genitals, which constitute more than 3 percent of all U.S. cancer diagnoses. Vaccination against the human papilloma virus (HPV) thwarts the virus’s spread, wrecks its ability to jump between people and inhibits a virus that in 2009 led to a cancer diagnosis for 30,000 people in the U.S., according to the National Cancer Insititue.

HPV infection is common. More than half of women between 14 and 59 catch a genital HPV. Many of these infections are low-risk, but when the body does not sweep out HPV intruders, high-risk HPV infected cells may lead to the unchecked growth of cancerous cells, according to Newswise, a research-reporting service.

HPV is actually a family of more than 150 viruses that infect human skin and mucosa, the moist membranes lining the nostrils, mouth and genital cavities. Two vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, prevent people from getting HPV infections by helping the body stockpile a medley of cellular defenses. Gardasil and Cervarix target HPV types 16 and 18, the two responsible for most cervical, anal, genital, and oropharynx cancer.  Blocking infection by types 16 and 18 also fights off other cancers, and the vaccines’ protection could last a lifetime. Gardasil also targets types 6 and 11.

It is important to complete the three-dose series for the vaccines; series completion rates are low for people in the Southern states, especially those that are poor and without private insurance, according to Newswise. Scientists are working to make a single vaccine that blocks infection by all HPV types, but today’s vaccines can prevent infection by two of the most common high-risk HPVs and may be the first step toward preventing HPV-linked cancers. 3 in 5 Kentucky adults favor a statewide smoking ban, according to an independent poll that may have oversampled smokers

By Al Cross
Kentucky Health News

Kentuckians now favor a statewide smoking ban by a margin of 3 to 2, according to the latest Kentucky Health Issues Poll conducted last fall for the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. Interestingly, 38 percent of the Kentucky adults polled said they were smokers, much more than the 29 percent found by a year-long federal survey. Among those identified as smokers, 37 percent favored such a law, while it was favored by 68 percent of former smokers and 75 percent of those who said they had never smoked.

Overall, 59 percent of those polled said they supported a state law that would prohibit smoking in most public places, including workplaces, public buildings, offices, restaurants and bars, while 38 percent said they opposed it and 4 percent said they had no opinion. The figures showed a 5-point shift toward support since the last poll, in 2011. The gain was among smokers and former smokers.

Support for the law was higher among registered voters than non-voters, perhaps a consideration for legislators considering the proposal. Among voters, 62 percent favored it while 36 percent opposed it. Only 50 percent of nonvoters supported it. Support was slightly higher among Republicans (64 percent) than among Democrats (59 percent; only 44 percent of independents, who comprise about 7 percent of Kentucky voters, said they supported it. The poll also found that support for the law increases as age and income increase.

As for the apparent oversampling of smokers, pollster Eric Rademacher said self-reporting of such habits is known to vary according to time, and the differences in his poll and the federal survey "are likely due to the different time frames in which they were conducted and the different methodology employed by each study." He added, "For example, a person who regularly smokes might openly disclose that information at one point in the year. However, at another point in the year, that same person might be directly exposed to news or advertising that paints smoking in a negative light from a societal perspective. Hearing that information could make the person more reluctant to discuss their smoking behavior with researchers soon after they have seen or heard it.”

Rademacher is co-director of the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Cincinnati, which did the poll for the foundation and the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati. A random sample of 1,680 adults from throughout Kentucky was interviewed by telephone from Sept. 20 to Oct. 14. This included 1,360 landline interviews and 320 interviews with cell phone users. In 19 of 20 cases, each statewide figure will be accurate to plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. Smaller samples, such as those of smokers and non-smokers, have larger margins of error. There are other sources of variation inherent in public opinion studies, such as non-response, question wording, or context effects that can introduce error or bias. For a copy of the poll's full questionnaire and guidance to interviewers, click here. For more information, go to www.healthy-ky.org
or www.healthfoundation.org/kentucky-health-issues-poll.

The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky noted the health implications that a smoke-free law would address: "Secondhand smoke poses serious health risks. Smoke-free environments are the only way to fully protect nonsmokers from these hazards. To reduce these risks, many Kentucky communities have adopted smoke-free policies. On Jan. 1, 2013, Hopkinsville became the 22nd municipality in Kentucky to implement a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance or regulation," bringing to 34 percent the share of Kentuckians who live in jurisdictions covered by comprehensive smoke-free ordinances or health-department regulations.

Annual health ratings of states still puts Kentucky 44th

Kentucky ranks 44th among the 50 states in overall health in United Health Foundation's America's Health Rankings. Darla Carter of The Courier-Journal reports that while this is the same rating Kentucky achieved last year, the state is not without some high points. Among them, Kentucky is 9th best nationwide for its low incidence of binge drinking. We are to be congratulated as well for our low violent crime, high immunization coverage and improved high-school graduation rate.

Smoking continues to be where Kentucky fails miserably. Still worst, with 29 percent of the population as smokers, the state also faces an uphill battle with more than 1 million obese adults and a high rate of cancer deaths. The state also needs to continue to improve its ability to control the nation's highest rate of preventable hospitalizations.

The rankings are published by the United Health Group's foundation, along with the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention. Kentucky’s challenges include having the nation’s highest smoking rate, more than 1 million obese adults and a high rate of cancer deaths. See more on Kentucky's ratings here. (Read more)

UK creates nation's first cancer-reporting system that uses electronic health records

Kentucky has the highest incidence of cancer in the United States, but it is about to be a national leader in delivering information about cancer cases to researchers.

With the help of an almost $1 million Centers for Disease Control grant, the University of Kentucky has created the nation's first working model for electronic reporting of cases to the state cancer registry. Kentucky's cancer doctors will be able to feed clinical data to the state's epidemiologists immediately so that they can see and analyze cancer statistics more quickly that ever before.

“This project is laying the groundwork for electronic reporting not only in Kentucky but across the United States,” said Eric Durbin, director of Cancer Informatics at the Kentucky Cancer Registry and one of the investigators who created the model. (Read more)

Two Kentucky moms participate in Duke study that found potentially toxic and unnecessary chemicals in most couches

Two Central Kentucky mothers participated in a Duke University-led study published today that shows that a vast majority of U.S. couches contain potentially toxic flame retardants that pose risks to humans. Wendy Koch of USA Today reports that the risks occur when the chemicals migrate from furniture foam into house dust.

The closely watched study revealed that more than 40 percent of the foam in the 102 couches tested contained the carcinogen chlorinated Tris, a substance that was ordered removed from children's pajamas 35 years ago. Another 17 percent of the couches contained pentaBDE, a globally banned substance. More than 85 percent were treated with a potentially toxic flame retardant, which researchers and experts say amounted to more than a pound of chemicals per couch. Flame retardants have been linked to hormone disruption, cancer and neurological toxicity in hundreds of animal and human studies. A fire specialist told Koch that the chemicals are not effective in suppressing fires.

The two Kentuckians, both women concerned about their family's health, sent samples from their couches to be analyzed and both expressed horror at the findings. Dr. David A. Atwood, a chemist at the University of Kentucky, said a systematic shift in chemical regulation is necessary to protect public health. “We have made an enormous mistake assuming that a chemical should be used freely until it is determined to have adverse health effects, rather than taking the position that all chemicals should be avoided unless it is absolutely certain that the chemical is safe." In New York, legislation is already in motion that would ban chlorinated Tris. According to the Kentucky Environmental Foundation, efforts will begin next year to restrict the toxic chemical. Christian Co. Health Dept. to stop providing cancer screens, contraceptives to residents of other counties

As of Jan. 1, the Christian County Health Department will not provide contraceptives or cancer screening to indigent patients if they do not reside in the county. Nick Tabor of the Kentucky New Era reports the department will provide those services to other counties' residents if the county in which they reside has signed a contract with Christian County before the Jan. 1 deadline agreeing to repay Christian County for those services. Tabor writes that the policy is not applicable to those services that are covered by state or federal government reimbursements.

The health department's move was prompted by a budget deficit that is close to $200,000, some of it traceable to a lack of reimbursement for contraceptive care. Mark Pyle, director of the department, told Tabor that residents of both Todd and Trigg counties often seek services in Christian County and Christian county taxpayers foot that bill. Pyle explained that there’s nothing in state law saying the health departments have to serve anyone who comes in, regardless of residence.

Shorten Your Life With Chemo!

-->
Quack Science Alert: Chemotherapy Causes Cancer!

Medical researchers are finally starting to admit that toxic chemotherapy drugs do absolutely nothing to cure cancer, and often cause the cancer patient to die much more quickly than they otherwise would have because of these so-called "treatments."
Cancer Causing Chemotherapy
Dr. Deborah Schrag from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and her colleagues let the cat out of the bag in a recent study they published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), which revealed that most cancer patients have no idea that their disease will never be cured as a result of chemotherapy.
According to the study's findings, as many as 69 percent of terminally ill lung cancer patients and 81 percent of terminally ill colorectal patients have no idea that chemotherapy drugs are totally incapable of curing their cancers. Though they are said to potentially help some cancer patients live slightly longer lives, chemotherapy drugs admittedly do not stop the growth or spread of cancer cells and tumors, which means many of the patients who opt for the treatment are not being told the full truth about its major shortcomings.
Often left out of the discussions between oncologists and their patients is the fact that patients who somehow survive their cancers following chemotherapy poisoning do so IN SPITE OF the treatment, and not because of it.
Poisoning the body with chemicals via chemotherapy only ends up destroying the immune system, causing tumors to grow back and bodily organs to shut down, which obviously shortens their lifespan rather than lengthening it.
Back in August, it was revealed that chemotherapy actually fuels the growth of cancer cells, contradicting many decades' worth of medical lies that continue to claim chemotherapy targets cancer cells for destruction. Any chance the body would have otherwise had for recovery, is all but eliminated as a result of chemotherapy, a “treatment” which literally destroys the body's own innate, cancer-targeting immune factors.

Shorten Your Life With Chemo!
According to Dr. Hossein Borghaei, an oncologist from the Fox Chase Cancer Centerin Philadelphia, "There is a lot of harm in not having patients understand the finality of the disease, [Chemotherapy drugs] are very powerful, they have a lot of side effects, the chemotherapy is going to harm you more than it helps you, and it can actually shorten your life. All of this should be taken into account."
Dr. Borghaei's statements are chilling because they affirm what natural health care providers have been saying for quite some time:
Chemotherapy is nothing but a sham "treatment" that puts cancer patients through needless pain and suffering while making the cancer industry rich.
Perhaps the most disturbing part about this now-normalized form of medical quackery is that oncologists typically fail to disclose to their patients the fact that chemotherapy does not even cure cancer, which gives them false hope.

"[T]raditional (cancer) therapies like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation do not destroy the small number of cells driving the cancer's growth," said the University of Michigan (UM)'s Comprehensive Cancer Center recently, following the release of several other studies showing that conventionally-accepted cancer treatments are a complete failure.”
This researching further confirms what we've known for years in the holistic healthcommunity: Chemotherapy is, flatly stated, just POISON. It's not "treatment," it's not medicine, and it's not prevention or a cure. It's poison with virtually no medicinal value except in perhaps one to two percent of cancer cases.

Chemotherapy Is Medical Fraud.

Aspartame (NutraSweet) Linked To Leukemia and Lymphomas!

-->
Aspartame Linked To Leukemia And Lymphoma In New Landmark Human Study
As few as one diet soda daily may increase the risk for leukemia in men and women, and for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men, according to new results from the longest-ever running study on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans. Importantly, this is the most comprehensive, long-term study ever completed on this topic, so it holds more weight than other past studies, which appeared to show no risk. And disturbingly, it may also open the door for further similar findings on other cancers in future studies.
22 Years And Over Two Million Person-Years
A total of 2,278,396 person-years of data derived from 77,218 women and 47,810 men over a 22-year is the most thorough and awesomely sheer amount of data to ever been utilized in a study of aspartame (NutraSweet).  Apart from sheer size, what makes this study superior to other past studies is the thoroughness with which aspartame intake was assessed. Every two years, participants were given a detailed dietary questionnaire, and their diets were reassessed every four years. Previous studies which found no link to cancer only ever assessed participants' aspartame intake at one point in time, which could be a major weakness affecting their accuracy.
One Single Diet Soda A Day Increases Leukemia • Multiple Myeloma • Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas
The combined results of this new study showed that just one 12-fl oz. can (355 ml) of diet soda daily leads to:
  • 42% higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis)
  • 102% higher multiple myeloma risk.
  • 31% higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk
These results were based on multi-variable relative risk models, all in comparison to participants who drank no diet soda. It is unknown why only men drinking higher amounts of diet soda showed increased risk for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Note that diet soda is the largest dietary source of aspartame (by far) in the U.S. Every year, Americans consume about 5,250 tons of aspartame in total, of which about 86 percent (4,500 tons) is found in diet sodas.
Confirms Previous Research On Animals
This new study shows the importance of the quality of research. Most of the past studies showing no link between aspartame and cancer have been criticized for being too short in duration and too inaccurate in assessing long-term aspartame intake. This new study solves both of those issues. The fact that it also shows a positive link to cancer should come as no surprise, because a previous best-in-class research study done on animals (900 rats over their entire natural lifetimes) showed strikingly similar results back in 2006: aspartame significantly increased the risk for lymphomas and leukemia in both males and females. More worrying is the follow on mega-study, which started aspartame exposure of the rats at the fetal stage. Increased lymphoma and leukemia risks were confirmed, and this time the female rats also showed significantly increased breast (mammary) cancer rates. This raises a critical question: will future; high-quality studies uncover links to the other cancers in which aspartame has been implicated (brain, breast, prostate, etc.)?

There is now more reason than ever to completely avoid aspartame in our daily diet. The devastation it inflicts on our immune systems should make it a no-brainer! For those who are tempted to go back to sugary sodas as a "healthy" alternative, this study had a surprise finding: men consuming one or more sugar-sweetened sodas daily saw a 66 percent increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (even worse than for diet soda).
The take away from this study....Sodas Kill People!

Canada declares BPA safe; Canadian government now breeding sickness for money, just like USA’s!

First they said it was toxic, now all of the sudden its safe! Never heard of flip-flopping on toxins, I thought that was just a political campaign strategy. Now, Health Canada's Food Directorate claims that exposure to BPA in food packaging "is not expected to pose a health risk to the general population, including newborns and young children."

This BPA, or bisphenol A, leaches out of containers into food and drinks and causes breast cancer, prostate cancer, birth defects in newborns, and much more! This is bad news, and is just as bad as FLUORIDATING WATER, which is now a double whammy for humans and animals, we have a drug in the municipal water and drugs in the bottled water. Great!

Corporate backed bureaucrats are back peddling for millions. The chemical industry is winning in Canada, just like it has been in the United Statessince after WWII, when Monsanto, Dow, Dupont, Bayer, BASF, and Big Pharma in general starting their wars on good health, and now GMO, vaccines and water are polluted to the max with chemicals that drive cancer cases.

You know there’s a government scam to make you sick when they take a “good for you” item and ACTUALLY ADD IN TOXINS. Many people buy bottled spring water because they already know the tap water has fluoride in it, and bleach, and pollution. People do not want to get cancer, so they try to eat and drink healthy. But the U.S. Government makes money off cancer and sickness, so they go out and turn a healthy item into a cancer causing item, or they simply don’t regulate companies that do it. It’s that simple. There’s no conspiracy or conspiracy theory here, just plain and simple politics.

See, politicians invest in Coke, in McDonald’s, in Vaccine Manufacturers, in Drug Makers, because they know how to double and triple their investments. Big Pharma is like advertising in America, it keeps the 1% from ever becoming part of the 99%, and you can bet they know where the toxins are, and they don’t feed them to their own families. They know about toxic water. They know about BPA. They know about Fluoride. They know about GMO.

Here it is; full coverage from Natural News:

"Keeping up with the latest science regarding chemical safety is apparently of little or no concern to the Canadian government, which recently declared the highly-toxic plastics chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) to be safe just two years after declaring it to be a toxin. In a report issued by Health Canada's Food Directorate, the agency has iterated its unfounded position that exposure to BPA in food packaging "is not expected to pose a health risk to the general population, including newborns and young children."

Study Results Say To Take Your Vitamins And Prevent Cancer

-->
Vitamins Lower Cancer Risk in Men!
October 18, 2012
By: Dr. Walter K. Crooks, DC, DM (P.), CCCN

In a cancer study that spanned 17 years and included 14,641 male participants who were 50 years of age or over, it was found that men that take multivitamins had a decreased cancer rate of 8% and reduced the deaths associated with cancer by a whopping 12%.
130,000 Lives Potentially Saved!
These numbers a statistically significant, especially knowing that more than 1.6 million new cancer cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, this translates into about 130,000 cancers being prevented every year!
The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association to coincide with the Annual American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research meeting.
I can remember the time when MD’s stated for fact that vitamin supplementation does nothing to increase the health of a person unless they have a deficiency, as measured by what they determine a deficiency entails.
Even now there are many MD’s that refuse to accept the fact, a fact that holistic health care providers have known all along, that people are not cloned and exact copies of one another, we are all as varied as the snowflake.
To look at the human as a collection of separate parts that have been assembled, and to treat in that manner is no different than being a auto diagnostician, checking each system of a car and repairing them as they are located.
If people would sit back and think for a second how it is to visit their own doctor they will see a pattern that is usually the same for everyone:
You go in they give you a drug that has been shown to ameliorate your symptoms. If that drug doesn’t do the trick then the MD answers with another drug to try out.
It is what I refer to as the “Spit-Balling” method of health care; meaning let’s shoot stuff at you see what sticks…
That’s not science; heck it’s not even as skilled as your local auto mechanic’s analysis of your vehicle!
It is becoming more and more apparent that the medical community has missed the boat whenever it comes to Chronic Health Conditions such as cancer.
Americans make up 5% of the world’s population, however we consume 47% of all the drugs produced worldwide!
You would think, if you follow the medical establishments propaganda, that we would rank 1st in the world for healthcare!

Well, don’t shoot the messenger but:
The U.S. Ranks 37thIn The World!
How can this be the case if we are taking our medications?

Americans Are Very Well Medicated, See For Yourself:

  • 11% of adults aged 18-65 are on 5 medications!
  • 21% of adults aged 18-65 are on 3 medications!
  • 25% of children are on at least one medication!
  • 37% of seniors are on 5 medications!
  • 52% of women in the U.S. are on at least 1 medication!
  • 65% of seniors are on 3 medications!
  • 90% of all seniors in America are taking at least one medication!

Study after study proves that the Holistic Health Care Model is the true path to living a healthy life.
The holistic, natural and hands on approach to health has as its base a goal of disease prevention!
On the other hand, allopathic, chemically engineered and un-natural “health care” has as it’s base disease management!  (if you would call it that)
A more fitting term for the American health care model would be “Monopolized Sickness Profit Care-less”, a program of keeping us alive but just sick enough and often enough to rely on their chemicals and death causing drugs.
You see no medication really has a side effect.
All Medication Have EFFECTS, Period.
The effect may rid your body of an infection, or the effect of the drug may be that you die……
Take your vitamins!

13-year-old with national following succumbs to rare cancer

A 13-year-old McLean County boy whose fight with a rare cancer gained national attention died last night. The death of Lane Goodwin was announced to 342,000 followers on his "Prayers for Lane" Facebook page, report Rich Suwanski and Megan Harris of the Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro.

"In 2010, Lane was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma Stage IV, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer that is only diagnosed in one out of 1 million children," the reporters write. "In 2010, he underwent 54 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In 2011, 13 tumors were found in his bones. . . . The family regularly updated followers on Facebook with his condition. Almost half a million people worldwide 'liked,' posted words of encouragement or started fundraisers to help the family with medical expenses. Followers included celebrities, college and professional athletes and social media friends who were inspired by his fight against the deadly disease."

His mother, Angela Goodwin, told the newspaper last month, “We never expected this. We knew there was some good support and prayers for Lane the last couple of years, but this has been unbelievable.” (Read more)

Ginger: The Cancer Slaying Herb!

-->
Ginger: The Cancer Slaying Herb!
Shhhhh…. Don’t let the American Cancer Society know about the findings of this study and the possible natural cure for breast cancer it found…it would disrupt their fund raising!
Every year since 1938 the number 2 killer of all Americans has been Cancer!
A research paper published in Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology has found that extracts of the herb Ginger kill cancer cells! The researchers note in their paper that in spite of the high global death toll of breast cancer, conventional drug therapies are modestly effective at best, often with serious side effects that include causing new and more aggressive cancers.
Ginger extract may prove to be more effective at fighting breast cancer than any drug on the market!
"Despite significant advances toward targeted therapy and screening techniques, breast cancer continues to be a chronic medical problem worldwide, being the most common type of cancer in women and the leading cause of death," they write.

"Typically, the treatment of breast cancer involves hormonal therapy with ... selective estrogen receptor (ER) modulators. However,
almost all patients with metastatic disease and approximately 40 percent of patients that receive [the ER modulator] Tamoxifen experience relapse that ends by death!"

The researchers also note that ER antagonists have little to no effectiveness against ER-negative breast cancer, and that the drugs may have such severe side effects that their usefulness is severely limited
.
In addition, many breast cancer cells are able to develop resistance to cancer drugs within the course of a single treatment.
"Thus, identification of novel agents that are relatively safe but can suppress growth of both ER-positive and ER-negative human breast cancers is highly desirable," they write.
Could This Be A Safe & Natural Treatment?
The researchers exposed breast cancer cells in the laboratory to an extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale). They found that ginger exhibited a highly prized anti-cancer trait known as selective cytotoxicity: It inhibited the reproduction of cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unaffected.
No conventional cancer treatment on the market exhibits this property!
Noted findings include the ability of ginger to positively modulated a large number of molecular anti-cancer mechanisms, these include:
  • Induction of programmed cell death (apoptosis).
  • Up-regulation of BAX, an apoptosis gene
  • Down-regulation of numerous cancer-associated genes and proteins
  • Increased expression of cancer-fighting proteins.
  • Inhibition of cancer-associated enzymes.
Although the researchers were not able to explain these molecular effects, the evidence in their favor was striking.
"Ginger may be a promising candidate for the treatment of breast carcinomas," the researchers concluded.
Ginger - A Medicinal Powerhouse!
If further studies show ginger's utility as a breast cancer treatment, it could revolutionize the entire field of cancer medicine, since ginger extract could easily be produced cheaply and in large quantities and it’s use would have little to know side effects.
Previous studies have already shown ginger to have a breast cancer-fighting effect. More specifically, ginger compound [6]-Gingerol inhibits metastasis of breast cancer cells. Other studies have suggested that ginger extract or ginger components have the ability to fight other cancers, including
  • Colon
  • Rectum
  • Liver
  • Lungs
  • Pancreas
  • Prostate
  • Skin (including Malignant Melanoma).
These findings should not be surprising; ginger is one of the oldest known medicinal foods. It’s origin appears to have been in southern China, it then rapidly spread throughout Asia to the Spice Islands and from there, eventually to West Africa, the Caribbean and India. Today it is widely consumed as a food, spice and medicine in cultures across the globe.
Scientific Studies Have Linked Ginger To No Fewer Than 100 Different Health Benefits!
Including its most well known usage as an anti-nausea and digestive aid, it is also a potent anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and is a powerful health-promoting herb for the heart and cardiovascular system. Ginger is used for many disease processes.
