Study: Prescriptions for antipsychotic drugs to state's poor kids increase 270% in 10 years; data also show painkiller patterns

By Amy Wilson and Al Cross
Kentucky Health News

A new report from the University of Kentucky has documented the rate at which the state's poor and disabled children are more and more frequently being prescribed very powerful drugs to treat what is assumed to be attention-deficit, schizophrenia, bi-polar disease and depression. The results indicate that males are more likely than females to be assigned those drugs by physicians, and minority males even more than their white counterparts. The study, conducted by the UK College of Communication and Information and Center for Business and Economic Research, shows that the amount of anti-psychotic drugs distributed to children on Medicaid in Kentucky jumped 270 percent in the decade from 2000 to 2010. Minority children were prescribed those medications at three times the rate of white children.

Beth Musgrave of the Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the study also "found unexplained geographical differences in how minority children are treated for mental illnesses. For example, minority children in Bath County in Eastern Kentucky are taking anti-psychotic medications at a rate nearly 26 times higher than minority children in Christian County in Western Kentucky. Yet the report found little difference in white children in those two counties.

The study also revealed wide geographical variances in prescriptions for drugs meant to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Poor children in Western Kentucky received much larger quantities of ADHD drugs than their counterparts in Eastern Kentucky. For example, Henderson County children take medications to treat ADHD at a rate 11 times higher than children in Leslie County."

Researcher Michael Childress looked at patterns for all drugs, and found a strong correlation between high use of painkillers and a high percentage of people who say they are in fair or poor health. He used that correlation to figure what level of painkiller use should be expected, and created a county-by-county map showing where the use is higher than expectation:

Childress told Musgrave that the study didn't try to answer why there are variances in prescription patterns. "This report provides data that should cause people to ask questions and to seek out answers," he said. "Health providers and people in these communities need to look at this data and start asking questions about what some of this data shows."

Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Audrey Tayse Haynes called some of the report's findings "disturbing." "We're taking a hard look at behavioral health in children and youth in this state," Haynes said. "Clearly, we need to have some education and training with our providers about prescribing habits. These are powerful drugs."

Dr. Paul Glaser, a pediatrician and child and adult psychiatrist and associate professor at the UK College of Medicine, had a different perspective. He said the increase in antipsychotic drugs may show that the state is finally treating child and adolescent mental illness.  (Read more)

Gluten Implicated In Neuropathy-Dizziness-Ataxia!

Having Trouble Walking Around Because Of Your Balance?

There are many Americans that are having difficulties with walking, balance, vertigo and dizziness that think that they are just clumsy or have been told that they will just have to learn to live with their Balance Disorder.....

Well, according to a study out of  Center for Peripheral Neuropathy, neurological damage of unknown origin or Idiopathic Dizziness, Vertigo, Peripheral Neuropathy or a whole host of other nerve related diseases may just be the work of Gluten Reactive Immune Response!

Gluten is a "potential neurotoxin"  in those that are susceptible to the insidious onslaught against their bodies systems. Gluten damage may cause everything from unexplained dizziness to numbness in the hands and feet.

Gluten Ataxia

Approximately 10 percent of people with Celiac disease develop neurological symptoms, according to the Center for Peripheral Neuropathy. Ataxia describes a neurological condition characterized by jerky movements and an awkward gait. Gluten ataxia specifically describes a neurological condition caused by a gluten sensitivity that leads to a wide range of symptoms, including:
     • Difficultly concentrating
     • Loss of balance
     • Frequent falls
     • Visual disturbances
     • Trouble walking
     • Tremors
     • Trouble judging distances

In people with a gluten sensitivity, eating foods with the gluten protein triggers an autoimmune reaction. The body attacks the gluten with antibodies in the same way that antibodies attack viruses. This damages the intestines. Intestinal damage inhibits absorption of nutrients, often leading to nutrient deficiencies.

Vitamin deficiencies could be to blame for gluten ataxia, according to an article in the Feb/Mar 2011 issue of Living Without magazine. Another explanation is that something in the brain is similar enough to gluten that the antibodies released to attack gluten also attack the brain.

This process is known as Molecular Mimicry and is a major theory as to why gluten can cause our immune system to attack self tissue, such as brain, nerve, connective tissue, thyroid, pancreas, insulin and any number of other tissues within our bodies...

The exact cause for gluten ataxia is unknown, but what is clear is that eating gluten makes it worse. A study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry in September 2003 found that participants with ataxia who followed a gluten-free diet demonstrated improvement in ataxia symptoms compared to the control group, and had significantly fewer anti-gliadin antibodies, or "anti-gluten" antibodies, after one year.

There are many instances in which people that get the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and other neurological conditions, are misdiagnosed and really suffer with Gluten related neurological conditions.

Gluten Neuropathy

Neuropathy, or Peripheral Neuropathy, describes a range of disorders characterized by nerve damage to one or more nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. Often the cause of the neuropathy is unknown, in these cases, many times, the culprit is Gluten or one of the food proteins that is cross-reactive to gluten....
Gluten neuropathy is when the autoimmune response is the root cause of the nerve damage.

A study published in Muscle & Nerve journal in December 2006 found that participants with neuropathy who followed a gluten-free diet showed significant improvement in symptoms after one year. The control group reported worsening of symptoms.

Treatment

People who have a gluten intolerance do not respond to simple allergy tests like someone with a milk or nut allergy might. The gentlest way to figure out if someone is sensitive to gluten is dietary therapy. Avoid gluten for several weeks, then reintroduce it and observe any reactions.

Once it is known that a person has a problem with gluten there is only one form of treatment: abstinence. People with any degree of gluten sensitivity or intolerance must completely give it up. This means not only avoiding obvious foods like bread and pasta, but also foods like soy sauce and licorice that contain small amounts of wheat.

It may seem like an impossible thing to do but it is easily managed if you have someone that knows, form personal experience, what is involved it this lifestyle change.

To know for sure what your problem is you need to find a someone that specializes in this type of Immune System Inflammatory Response to Food Proteins.

Paralysis and Neuropathy Cured Using Functional Neurology

Peripheral Neuropathy And Paralysis Cured On Video!

Peripheral Neuropathy causes devastation, not only to those afflicted with it, but also to those that love them.

Are you or a loved one burdened by neuropathy that has taken over the control of your ability to be happy and productive?

There Is Hope For Your Recovery From Neuropathy!

This young lady felt much the same as you, stricken with peripheral neuropathy, paralyzed in one leg and hopeless.

She spent 2 years of her life searching for someone to give her an answer that would allow for her to return back to the life she once led. However, each time she would be seen by these so called “specialists” she was given a prescription for mind altering anti-depressants and seizure drugs to cope with the symptoms, but never given any hope for a cure!

She Was At That Point Of Giving Up!
Then, one day, someone told her about the amazing results being achieved through Functional Neurology and that there was a doctor by the name of  Dr. Walter K. Crooks, who was an expert in this field of science.

The man went on to explain the amazing results Dr. Crooks was achieving with the most difficult of peripheral neuropathy cases. He confessed that he too had been one of Dr. Crooks' many success stories. Just as with most chronic health patients, he had been pushed aside and told to learn to live with the neuropathy because there was no cure.

With a skeptical view of this "too good to be true" neuropathy specialist, this young lady in the above video made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Crooks. During this appointment she explained in detail what had led up to her being paralyzed.

She had broken her lower back in an accident 2 years prior, which resulted in a severe nerve root injury that left her left leg paralyzed along with the peripheral neuropathy of her ankle, foot and toes.

She went on to explain that even before her emergency surgery, the surgeon explained to her that she would never walk again without the assistance of a wheelchair or walker and she must wear a special leg splint known as an AFO.

As the video shows, 3 days into her treatment, she had the use of her foot and leg again. Within the next 2 weeks she was totally free of her wheelchair and 4 point walker and able to walk in sandals.

It is understandable, after all she endured, that her ability to trust anyone with her health was almost non-existant. Fortunately for her, Dr. Walter K. Crooks understands this about these type of patients that are stricken with chronic conditions that have been labeled as incurable.

For this reason, Dr. Crooks allows for his results to speak for his knowledge of the nervous, endocrine, immune and digestive systems of the human body.

By harnessing our own bodies ability to heal, coupled with, the natural, medicinal and life-sustaining health products which come forth from the earth, both of which are gifts given to us by God, Dr. Walter K. Crooks is blessed to have results, such as those in the above video, on a seemingly weekly basis.

If you have been told that there is no hope for your own chronic health condition, don't let the negativitiy you have endured up and to this point in time keep you from what may be your own freedom from whatever it is that has been controlling your health and your happiness.

Watch the video as Suzie regains her ability to move her ankle, foot and toes and overcomes her paralysis and peripheral neuropathy.

Covington police chief: New prescription-drug law has unintended consequence of encouraging pain pill addicts to use heroin, commit crimes

Black tar heroin
Kentucky's new prescription drug law may be having its desired effect of taking prescription painkillers off the streets, but could be forcing those very same addicts into using heroin. That's the view of Covington Police Chief Spike Jones, who took his case to the state Senate Judiciary Committee last week to complain about increased crime in his area and to ask for some money for help.

The drug law passed in April 2012, designated House Bill 1, requires Kentucky doctors to complete patients' medical histories, conduct physicals, check photo identifications and run names through the state's KASPER (Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting) database before prescribing a controlled substance for pain relief. It has required a vast network of oversight of doctors and patients by government and licensing entities. This has reportedly caused some doctors to stop writing those prescriptions completely.

Tiffany Wilson of Cincinnati's WKRC-TV reports that Chief Jones reports more prostitution, theft, car thefts and car break-ins in his northern Kentucky region. He asked the state legislature for money to research how deep the problem is and to discuss the need for more treatment facilities.

Jones pointed to the recent closure of the pain management clinic of Dr. Gary Shearer in Florence as adding to the problem. Shearer's license was suspended following the death of 15 patients from prescription-drug overdoses. These patients, Jones told Wilson, are exactly the ones at risk for taking the next step and turning to heroin. He added that heroin dealers will often give potential customers the first hit for free, "and from that point, there's no returning to prescription pills." (Read more)

Vitamin D Slashes Cancer Risk By 77 Percent

Research Shows Vitamin D Slashes Cancer Risk By 77 Percent!

The study involved 1,179 healthy women from rural Nebraska. One group of women was given calcium (around 1500 mg daily) and vitamin D (1100 IU daily) while another group was given placebo.

Over four year, the group receiving the calcium and vitamin D supplements showed a 60 percent decrease in cancers.

Considering just the last three years of the study reveals an impressive 77 percent reduction in cancer due to supplementation. (The full press release of this study is included below. It provides more details about the findings.)

However The

American Cancer Society

Refuses To Endorse Cancer Prevention!

This research on vitamin D is such good news that the American Cancer Society, of course, had to say something against it. An ACS spokesperson, Marji McCullough, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society, flatly stated that nobody should take supplements to prevent cancer.

If it seems surprising to you that the American Cancer Society -- which claims to be against cancer -- would dissuade people from taking supplements that slash their cancer risk by 77 percent, then you don't know much about the ACS. In my opinion, the ACS is an organization that actually prevents prevention and openly supports the continuation of cancer as a way to boost its power and profits. The ACS is the wealthiest non-profit in America and has very close ties to pharmaceutical companies, mammography equipment companies and other corporations that profit from cancer. Notice the name, too: It isn't the American Anti-Cancer Society, it's the American Cancer Society! What they really stand for is right in the name!

Click here to read more about the ACS and its financial ties to chemical companies, pharmaceutical companies and radiology equipment manufacturers.

The cancer industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and I've written extensively about the criminal organizations that protect and promote the industry. Just about everything the public is told about cancer by these cancer institutions is a lie. Those "race for the cure" cancer walks are a complete scam (they really aren't searching for any way to prevent cancer or cure cancer, they're only searching for new patented drugs to profit from cancer).

This research on vitamin D is a huge threat to the cancer industry profit mongers because it reveals a way to prevent cancer for free -- by seeking natural sunlight exposure and letting your skin manufacture your own powerful anti-cancer medicine (vitamin D). The idea that the cancer industry could lose 80% of its patients due to widespread education about vitamin D and sunlight scares the living daylights out of the cancer industry. Billions of dollars in cancer profits are at stake here, so the pro-cancer groups have to do everything they can to discredit vitamin D by creating doubt and confusion. The degree of dishonesty at work here is almost unbelievable to those who don't really know what's happening in the cancer industry.

Ten questions to ask about the cancer industry.

#1: Why does the cancer industry refuse to educate people about cancer prevention?

#2: If people keep donating money for the "search" for a cancer cure, why won't drug companies pledge to "open source" their patents on cancer drugs to benefit the people whose donations funded them in the first place? In other words, why do people donate money for cancer research but then get charged for cancer drugs?

#3: Why does the entire cancer industry so strongly dissuade people from using sunlight exposure to dramatically reduce their cancer risk? (Hint: Follow the money to the sunscreen industry...)

#4: Why have all the really good cancer supplements, clinics and naturopaths been banned, arrested or run out of the country? (Look up the FDA's oppression of Lane Labs over MGN-3 for a fascinating review of this...)

#5: The U.S. has poured billions of dollars into the cancer industry over the last three decades. Cancer cures were promised in the 1970's. Why are cancer rates still essentially the same today as they were in the 1970's?

#6: Why does the cancer industry continue to use chemotherapy, radiation and other toxic procedures to "kill tumors" when the latest science clearly shows that cancer tumors are only the symptoms, not the cause, of cancer? Chemotherapy destroys immune function and causes permanent damage to the heart, brain and liver...

#7: The World Health Organization says that 70% of all cancers are easily preventable through dietary and lifestyle changes. This latest research shows that sunlight and low-cost calcium supplements can slash cancer risk by 77% in women. Why won't conventional medicine embrace this low-cost, safe and highly effective method for preventing cancer?

#8: The cancer industry routinely attacks anti-cancer herbs, superfoods and supplements. Why is the cancer industry opposed to anti-cancer nutrition? Why does it believe that only man, not nature, can manufacture anti-cancer medicines?

#9: Dark skin pigmentation blocks ultraviolet radiation, meaning that people with black skin need far more time under the sun to generate the same amount of vitamin D as someone with white skin. Not surprisingly, black women suffer extremely high rates of breast cancer while black men show similarly high levels of prostate cancer. The white-dominated medical industry pretends to be "mystified" by all this. Why won't conventional medicine simple tell black people the truth about vitamin D, skin pigmentation and cancer? Why do oncologists try to keep black people ignorant about their vitamin D deficiencies?

#10: Why is it illegal for nutritional supplement manufacturers to tell the truth about the anti-cancer effects of their products? Broccoli, garlic, onions and sprouts all have powerful anti-cancer effects, as do dozens of rainforest herbs (Cat's Claw, for example), Chinese herbs and Western herbs. But the FDA threatens and censors any company that dares to mention cancer prevention on its supplement products. Why is the FDA enforcing a policy of nutritional ignorance with U.S. consumers? Why does the federal government want people to remain ignorant of methods for preventing or treating cancer?

You probably already know the answer to all these questions, because the answer is the same for each one: Corporate profits. Cancer is hugely profitable to treat. Substantially preventing cancer would result in a loss of billions of dollars in profits for the oncologists, drug companies, hospitals and clinics that currently prey upon the finances of cancer victims.

The cancer industry is operated like a criminal racket, using false information, intimidation, political pressure and propaganda to protect its power base and keep its corporations profitable. And that, my friends, is exactly why the industry is against the use of sunlight to prevent cancer. Free medicine from the sky? The very thought of it makes the cancer industry cringe. Sunlight doesn't even need a prescription, you see, and it can't be patented, either.

Creighton Press Release

Here's the original press release about the new findings on vitamin D and cancer prevention:

OMAHA, Neb., June 8 -- Most Americans and others are not taking enough vitamin D, a fact that may put them at significant risk for developing cancer, according to a landmark study conducted by Creighton University School of Medicine.

The four-year, randomized study followed 1,179 healthy, postmenopausal women from rural eastern Nebraska.* Participants taking calcium, as well as a quantity of vitamin D3 nearly three times the U.S. government's Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) for middle-age adults, showed a dramatic 60 percent or greater reduction in cancer risk than women who did not get the vitamin.

The results of the study, conducted between 2000 and 2005, were reported in the June 8 online edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

"The findings are very exciting. They confirm what a number of vitamin D proponents have suspected for some time but that, until now, have not been substantiated through clinical trial," said principal investigator Joan Lappe, Ph.D., R.N., Creighton professor of medicine and holder of the Criss/Beirne Endowed Chair in the School of Nursing. "Vitamin D is a critical tool in fighting cancer as well as many other diseases."

Other Creighton researchers involved in the study included Robert Recker, M.D.; Robert Heaney, M.D.; Dianne Travers-Gustafson, M.S.; and K. Michael Davies, Ph.D.

Research participants were all 55 years and older and free of known cancers for at least 10 years prior to entering the Creighton study. Subjects were randomly assigned to take daily dosages of 1,400-1,500 mg supplemental calcium, 1,400-1,500 mg supplemental calcium plus 1,100 IU of vitamin D3, or placebos. National Institutes of Health funded the study.

Over the course of four years, women in the calcium/vitamin D3 group experienced a 60 percent decrease in their cancer risk than the group taking placebos.

On the premise that some women entered the study with undiagnosed cancers, researchers then eliminated the first-year results and looked at the last three years of the study. When they did that, the results became even more dramatic with the calcium/vitamin D3 group showing a startling 77 percent cancer-risk reduction.

In the three-year analysis, there was no statistically significant difference in cancer incidence between participants taking placebos and those taking just calcium supplements.

Through the course of the study, 50 participants developed nonskin cancers, including breast, colon, lung and other cancers.

Lappe said further studies are needed to determine whether the Creighton research results apply to other populations, including men, women of all ages, and different ethnic groups. While the study was open to all ethnic groups, all participants were Caucasian, she noted.

There is a growing body of evidence that a higher intake of vitamin D may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of cancer, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.

Humans make their own vitamin D3 when they are exposed to sunlight. In fact, only 10-15 minutes a day in a bright summer sun creates large amounts of the vitamin, Lappe said. However, people need to exercise caution since the sun's ultraviolet B rays also can cause skin cancer; sunscreen blocks most vitamin D production.

In addition, the latitude at which you live and your ancestry also influence your body's ability to convert sunlight into vitamin D. People with dark skin have more difficulty making the vitamin. Persons living at latitudes north of the 37th parallel -- Omaha is near the 41st parallel -- cannot get their vitamin D naturally during the winter months because of the sun's angle. Experts generally agree that the RDA** for vitamin D needs to be increased substantially, however there is debate about the amount. Supplements are available in two forms -- vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Creighton researchers recommend vitamin D3, because it is more active and thus more effective in humans.

* Study participants came from the Nebraska counties of Douglas, Colfax, Cuming, Dodge, Saunders, Washington, Sarpy, Burt and Butler. ** RDA recommendations for vitamin D are 200 IU/d, birth-age 50; 400 IU/d, 50-70 years; and 600 IU/d, 70 years and older.

Injection-site sarcomas in cats

Srivastav A, Kass PH, McGill LD, Farver TB and Kent MS. Comparative vaccine-specific and other injectable-specific risks of injection-site sarcomas in cats. J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2012; 241: 595-602.

Injection site sarcomas are malignant tumors that have been associated with vaccination sites. However, the factors associated with injection site tumors remain largely unknown or controversial at best. This study examined the associations between vaccine types and other injectable drugs with the subsequent development of injection site sarcomas in cats. For this study, pathologic samples from 181 cats with soft tissue sarcomas (STS) at injection sites were compared with 96 cats with tumors at non-injection sites and 159 cats with other tumor types. By examining both anatomic and temporal associations, it was found that association of STS with injections of long-acting steroids was higher in cats with tumors at injection sites (interscapular) than cats without tumors at these sites. It was also found that recombinant vaccines were less likely to have been used at injection site sarcomas than inactivated vaccines. Overall, the propensity for tumors to arise at injection sites was small. [MK]
